Adoor GopalakrishnanYours truly is a freelance writer now having worked for newspapers The Island, The Virakesari (Daily and Sunday) and The Navamani in the print media and in the electronic media had worked in the News Room of the state radio - the SLBC as a senior journalist and presenter in both English and Thamil and a presenter of cultural items in Thamil over the state TV. Presently, this columnist is engaged in writing different columns to different newspapers on subjects he has gathered over the past 50 years or so. Also on the state radio's English Service, he works as a relief presenter of songs and the like.

Let us begin this week's column on some of the not so publicized aspects of the aesthetic cinema in India. Spasmodically, we shall talk about international cinema too by and by. Yours truly is a frequent visitor to the International Film Festivals of India sponsored by the Ministry of Information in India. The Directorate manages the festival held in Indian mega cities like New Delhi, Kolkatta, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. But for the past 11 years, there is the prestigious Kerala Film Festival showcased in that state's capital Thiruvananthapuram, shortened as Trivandrum. So, personal experiences at these festivals would be shared with you now and then in these columns.

The IFFI (International Film Festival of India) has shifted its showings to a permanent venue since 2005. The venue is Panaji, the capital of the state of Goa. From 1991 to 1997, I had been attending the IFFI on invitation by the Directorate. Since I was away from our country intermittently working in Male in the Maldives, Muscat in Oman and Cincinnati in the USA as an English Teacher, I missed the IFFI between 1998 and 2004. However, having returned to my Native land, I had the opportunity to go to Goa during the last two years and also for the first time to Thiruvananthapuram, last year. So, you would be assured that my account at the festivals would be authentic.

Here are some glimpses on some of the acclaimed Indian artistes;

Gopalakrishnan hails from a place called Adoor in Kerala. He makes films in Malayalam. But he is reckoned as one of the finest filmmakers in India . The visiting ace artistic filmmaker in India Shyam Benegal had paid a high tribute to Adoor recently. In 2004, Gopalakrishnan was conferred Dada Saheb Phalke Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian Cinema. Adoor is in his late 60s now. I have met him on various occasions and first at Pune in Maharashtra in India at the FTTI (Film and Television Training Institute) where Adoor was lecturing to the students, yours truly included, that followed a six week course in Film Appreciation.

Adoor himself passed out from the Pune institute in 1962. He is a trained script writer and director. He has made nine feature films. I saw his film Svayamvaram (Self Selection of Marriage Partner) here in Colombo in the early 1970s. Adoor has made more than two dozen short films and documentaries.

His film Elipathayam won the British Film Institute's Award for the most original and imaginative film of 1982Adoor is credited to have kicked off the 'new wave' in Malayalam film industry with his film mentioned above that won him the National award for best direction. Adoor Gopalakrishnan is a social-conscious artiste. He interprets society in cinematic terms that is artistic. He has inspired many Indian filmmakers as a stylist. He handles complex themes in simple fashion. One of his fine films is Mathilukal (Walls) adapted from a famous novel in Malayalam. His films were shown in Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Rotterdam and Toronto Film Festivals and critics came to notice him as an international filmmaker. He has won the International Film Critics Prize five times. His film Elipathayam won the British Film Institute's Award for the most original and imaginative film of 1982.

Adoor has published a few books: The World of Cinema and Cinema Anubhavam . Both won the National and State Awards respectively in 1984 and 2004.

His docu-feature Kalamandalam Rama Kutty Nair pays tribute to the art form Kathakali and its maestro. This feature is described as"celluloid voyage of Katahakali on stage". In this film Adoor presents highly stylized classical form of theatre in Kerala. It's an assemblage of dance, drama and music.

Discerning cinegoers in our country certainly know about the significance of Adoor Gopalakrishnan's contribution to artistic cinema.

Bye for now.
