Sri Lanka was sent a very confidential message by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton through Assistant Secretary for Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, Robert O’ Blake Jnr. and US Ambassador here in Colombo from 2006 till the war was concluded on the banks of the Nanthikadal lagoon in Mullivaikkal, May 2009. Blake met with the External Affairs Minister one to one in his hotel suite to convey Madam Clinton’s message to President Rajapaksa, say informed sources, after a formal meeting with the Minister and his senior staff. That’s two years after the war when the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Panel Report is held out like a menacing hand. Two years, when most post war issues should have been managed and brought under control. That responsibility ignored with PR manipulations beyond the shores of Sri Lanka, professorial glib talk to satisfy the gullible middle class here, Sinhala heroes’ playing for local media and vernacular rhetoric aired for the poor and the innocent Sinhala majority, the world of the Rajapaksas revolve with increasing war crimes accusations. Taking umbrage against the UN and its SG instead of resolving issues at home, has only allowed piling of carefully sifted and documented evidence against this regime, during the past two years.

மேற்குவங்கத்ததில் திரிணாமுல்காங்., மற்றும் காங்கிரஸ் கூட்டணியினர் 205 இடங்களில் முன்னிலை வகித்து வருகின்றனர். இடதுசாரி கட்சியினர் 67 இடங்களில் முன்னிலை வகித்து வருகின்றனர். புதுச்சேரி யூனியனில் இன்று காலை ஓட்டு எண்ணும் பணி துவங்கியது முதல் தி.மு.க., காங்கிரஸ் கூட்டணி பின்னடைந்துள்ளது. என்.ஆர்., காங்கிரஸ் அ.தி,மு.க., கூட்டணி 7 இடங்களிலும் முன்னிலை வகித்து வருகின்றன.

It’s increasingly clear that the operation was a planned assassination, multiply violating elementary norms of international law. There appears to have been no attempt to apprehend the unarmed victim, as presumably could have been done by 80 commandos facing virtually no opposition—except, they claim, from his wife, who lunged towards them. In societies that profess some respect for law, suspects are apprehended and brought to fair trial. I stress “suspects.” In April 2002, the head of the FBI, Robert Mueller, informed the press that after the most intensive investigation in history, the FBI could say no more than that it “believed” that the plot was hatched in Afghanistan, though implemented in the UAE and Germany. What they only believed in April 2002, they obviously didn’t know 8 months earlier, when Washington dismissed tentative offers by the Taliban (how serious, we do not know, because they were instantly dismissed) to extradite bin Laden if they were presented with evidence—which, as we soon learned, Washington didn’t have. Thus Obama was simply lying when he said, in his White House statement, that “we quickly learned that the 9/11 attacks were carried out by al Qaeda.”

As part of bringing awareness to the current plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka and the wider engagement of governments around the world, the Global Tamil Forum (GTF) met with senior civil servants at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in London, yesterday. Mr. Andrew Patrick, Director for South Asia, Deputy Director William Middleton and Ms. Christine McNeill, the Head of Sri Lanka Desk at the FCO were met by the GTF delegation lead by its President Rev. Father S.J.Emmanuel, members of British Tamils Forum (BTF), British Tamil Conservatives (BTC) and Tamils for Labour. Father Emmanuel shared the gratitude of the Global Tamil Community for the explicit stance the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has taken by welcoming the UN Panel Report commissioned by the UN Secretary General and the call for an independent and credible inquiry to establish the truth so that sustainable reconciliation can be achieved.

New Democrat Rathika Sitsabaiesan admits she is still “feeling a little numb” about her historic victory in Scarborough-Rouge River on Monday night. As the first Tamil elected to Parliament, she says she is also humbled. The 29-year-old first-time candidate came to Canada with her family when she was 5. “My parents are very, very proud,” she said Tuesday morning after a night of celebration with throngs of supporters at her Sheppard Ave. campaign office and later with New Democrats from across the city at NDP Leader Jack Layton’s victory party downtown. Despite “still trying to absorb it all,” the advocate for workers, students and newcomers says she wasn’t surprised by her win. The ethnically diverse riding in the city’s northeast end has a large youth population and one of the GTA’s largest concentrations of Tamils. “But it was the entire community of Scarborough-Rouge River that came together for this,” said Sitsabaiesan, who moved to the riding several years ago after completing a master’s degree in industrial relations at Queen’s University.
