'எமது குழு கிரிக்கெட்டில் கிண்ணங்களை வென்றெடுப்பது எமக்கும் விருப்பமானது. நாங்கள் முஸ்லிம்கள்தான் என்றாலும் எங்களுக்கும் நாடு குறித்த உணர்வு இருக்கிறது. ஆனாலும் இந்த கிரிக்கெட்டால் அதிகமாகத் துயரடைவது நாங்கள்தான். பிரேமதாஸ விளையாட்டரங்கு அமைக்கப்பட முன்பிருந்தே நாங்கள் இங்கு குடியிருக்கிறோம். ஆனால் நாங்கள் இன்று சிறைப்பட்டிருக்கிறோம். கிரிக்கெட் போட்டிகள் நடைபெறும் நாட்களில் எங்கள் வீடுகளுக்குள் சிறைப்பட்டிருக்கிறோம். நாங்கள் தெருவிலிறங்கிச் சென்றால் போட்டியில் தோற்றுவிட நேருமா? உண்மையில் எங்களுக்கு இந்தக் கிரிக்கெட் மீதே வெறுப்பாக இருக்கிறது. எங்களால் வழமைபோல வாழ முடியவில்லை. கிரிக்கெட் போட்டி நடைபெறும் நாட்களில் நாங்கள் நாடுகடத்தப்பட்டவர்களைப் போல வாழ்கிறோம். இது என்ன சாபக்கேடு ஐயா?'  - லிண்டன் வீதியில் வசிக்கும் இவரது பெயர் விபரங்களைக் குறித்துக் கொண்ட போதும் 'இந்தக் காலம் அவ்வளவு நல்லதல்ல' என்ற எச்சரிக்கைக் குறிப்போடு 'அவற்றைப் பிரசுரிக்க வேண்டாம்' என அவர் கேட்டுக் கொண்டார்.

Statement — Minister Kenney issues statement to mark Thai Pongal

Ottawa, January 14, 2014 — The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister for Multiculturalism, issued the following statement to mark Thai Pongal: “Today, Tamils around the world begin celebrating the four-day harvest festival of Thai Pongal. “During Thai Pongal – also known as the ‘Festival of the Tamils’ – celebrants traditionally give thanks for a bountiful harvest. Each of the four days of the festival has its own particular significance and characteristic rituals associated with home, family, agriculture and worship. “For Tamils in Canada, India, Sri Lanka, and around the world, Thai Pongal is a time of joy, thanksgiving, reconciliation, and community celebration.  “Over the past three decades, the Tamil-Canadian community has been one of the fastest growing visible minority communities in this country. In that time, Canadians of Tamil origin have made tremendous contributions to our diverse society. “As Minister for Multiculturalism, I offer my warmest wishes to all those celebrating Thai Pongal.  “Thai Piranthal Vali Pirakkum.”

[From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia] Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (Xhosa pronunciation: [xoˈliːɬaɬa manˈdeːla]) (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative, multiracial election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalised racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation. Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as the President of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1991 to 1997. Internationally, Mandela was the Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999. A Xhosa born to the Thembu royal family, Mandela attended the Fort Hare University and the University of Witwatersrand, where he studied law. Living in Johannesburg, he became involved in anti-colonial politics, joining the ANC and becoming a founding member of its Youth League. After the Afrikaner nationalists of the National Party came to power in 1948 and began implementing the policy of apartheid, he rose to prominence in the ANC's 1952 Defiance Campaign, was elected President of the Transvaal ANC Branch and oversaw the 1955 Congress of the People. Working as a lawyer, he was repeatedly arrested for seditious activities and, with the ANC leadership, was prosecuted in the Treason Trial from 1956 to 1961 but was found not guilty. Although initially committed to non-violent protest, in association with the South African Communist Party he co-founded the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in 1961, leading a bombing campaign against government targets.
