- (Dr Lionel Bopage was the founder leader of the Society for Socialist Culture, better known as “Samajavadee Kala Sangamaya” in Sri Lanka, the cultural front that is affiliated with the JVP (Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna). Lionel became the General Secretary of the JVP later, but in 1984 he officially resigned from the JVP due to the ideological and other differences developed with the leadership. In a collective effort with comrades like Nandana Marasinghe and Ms Sunila Abesekara, he brought “Vimukthi Gee” songs recital into life. Currently he is an activist in diverse social and political activities both in Sri Lanka and Australia.) -

Thank you for the invitation to speak at this important occasion. People are driven by a strong desire to know or learn why things happen in a certain way in a particular culture. Gradually this curiosity expands to looking at how those things happen in other cultures. That curiosity is filled at least partially by the content provided in translated works. With the advent and advancement of capitalism, translated works started filling the gaps in our knowledge base and improving our critical thinking abilities. I believe, the history of translated literature runs back to the times of arrival of Ven Mahinda Thero in Sri Lanka. At later stages, the teaching traditions in Buddhist temples would have been influenced by many inputs from Asian countries and the wisdom travellers and traders brought to the island.
The Buddhist revivalist movement came into being in reacting to the Christian missionary activities in the south. With that came the thoughts of civilizational supremacy of Sinhala people, which were later interpreted in a chauvinistic way. Anagarika Dharmapala declared that the Sinhala language was the best language of the world and the Sinhala civilisation was the noblest. We inclined to consider other languages and nations as inferior. Similarly, Arumuka Navalar, a Shaivite scholar and a polemicist led the Hindu revivalist movement.

Unfortunately, revivalist leaders like them lacked a wider vision for the future. They advocated safeguarding outdated practices such as accommodating the caste system. Most of the Indian leaders, such as Raja Ram Mohan Roy of the Hindu Revivalist Movement and Syed Ahamed Khan of the Muslim Revivalist Movement were quite different. They did not advocate the supremacy of their languages or faiths, but promoted social harmony and goodwill, and reconciliation and solidarity with the other. They advocated discarding outdated practices and rituals of their own faiths in adjusting to the environments of the modern-day.

We could note the lack of effort at the time to translate into Sinhala any renowned foreign literature related to arts, philosophy, science or technology. I will not comment on the Tamil side as I am not so familiar with it. So, no wonder we have such a long period of recent history filled with hatred towards the other, in terms of caste, language, race and religion.

The existence of different languages, religions and cultures in a mutually exclusive and disrespected environment can lead to conflict. Particularly, when political class and the social elite utilise the differences in diverse societies to securing their narrow interests and intricate privileges, no room is left for promoting social harmony and goodwill, reconciliation and solidarity with the other. The current situation in Sri Lanka shows this best. This is not limited to us in Sri Lanka. I hope things will not be in the reverse gear with what is being currently promoted in India.

Literary works including translated work is supposed to move people and societies away from ecstasy to wisdom. Accumulation of various linguistic and cultural translations to one’s own literature supports this process. Such accumulation makes reference to philosophical conceptualisations of other societies. Thus, the literature of a society becomes more nourished, and inevitably, people get accustomed to universal thinking.

"மார்க்சிய அடிப்படைகளை நூல்களாக எழுதுதல்" என்பதைத் தாரகமந்திரமாகக்கொண்டு இயங்கிவரும் தளமிது. அத்தளத்திலிருந்து இக்கட்டுரையினை மீள்பிரசுரம் செய்கின்றோம் மிகவும்  பயனுள்ள மீள்பிரசுரம் என்பதால். -

(மார்க்சியத்தின் மூன்று பிரிவுகளான தத்துவம், அரசியல் பொருளாதாரம், விஞ்ஞான கம்யூனிசம் என்பதின் தோற்றத்தையும், அதன் உட்கூறுகளையும் லெனின் மிகச் சுருக்கமாகவும், தெளிவாகவும் விவரித்துள்ளார். மார்க்சியம் எந்தவித குறுங்குழுவாதத்தின் அடிப்படையில் தோன்றியவை கிடையாது, உலக நாகரிக வளர்ச்சியின் தொடர்க்சியே மார்க்சியம். மனித குலத்தின் முன்னணிச் சிந்தைனயாளர்கள் ஏற்கெனவே எழுப்பியிருந்த கேள்விகளுக்கு மார்க்சியம் விடைகளிக்கிறது. மார்க்சியத்தை சுயமாக அறிந்து கொள்ள முயற்சிப்பவர்கள் இந்த சிறிய கட்டுரையை பலமுறை படிக்க வேண்டும். மார்க்சியத்தின் இந்த மூன்று உட்பிரிவுகளையும் தனித்தனியாக என்ன பேசிகிறது என்பதை மனதில் நிறுத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். இதனைத் தொடர்ந்து மார்க்சிய ஆசிரியர்களின் நூல்களைப் படிக்கும் போது, அது எந்தப் பிரிவின் அடிப்படையில் எழுதப்பட்டது என்பதை அறிந்து படித்தால் தெளிவுகிடைக்கும்.)

மார்க்சின் போதனை, நாகரிக உலெகங்கிலும் (அதிகாரத் தரப்பினதும், மிதவாதிகளதும் ஆகிய இரு வகையான) முதலாளித்துவ விஞ்ஞானம் அனைத்திடமிருந்தும் அளவற்ற பகைமையும் வெறுப்பையும் கிளப்பிவிடுகிறது. மார்க்சியம் ஒரு வகையான "நச்சுத்தன்மை கொண்ட குறுங்குழுவாதம்" என்று அது கருதுகின்றது. அதனிடமிருந்து வேறு எந்த விதமான போக்கையும் எதிர்பார்க்க முடியாதுதான். ஏனெனில், வர்க்கப் போராட்டத்தின் அடிப்படையில் அமைந்துள்ள ஒரு சமுதாயத்தில் "ஒருசார்பற்ற" சமுதாய விஞ்ஞானம் எதுவும் இருக்க முடியாது. அதிகாரத் தரப்பைச் சேர்ந்த விஞ்ஞானம் அனைத்தும், மிதவாதிகளது விஞ்ஞானம் அனைத்தும் ஏதாவெதாரு விதத்தில் கூலி அடிமை முறையை ஆதரிக்கிறது. மார்க்சியமோ கூலி அடிமை முறையை ஈவிரக்கமின்றி எதிர்த்துப் போர்ப்பிரகடனம் செய்துள்ளது. மூலதனத்துக்குக் கிடைக்கும் லாபத்தைக் குறைப்பதன் மூலம் தொழிலாளர்களின் கூலியை உயர்த்தலாமா என்ற பிரச்சினையில் முதலாளிகள் ஒருசார்பற்றவர்களாய் இருப்பார்களென எதிர்பார்ப்பது எப்படி அசட்டுத் தனமாகுமோ, ஏமாளித்தனமாகுமோ, அப்படித்தான் கூலி அடிமை முறைச் சமுதாயத்தில் விஞ்ஞானம் ஒருசார்ப்பற்றதாய் இருக்குமென எதிர்பார்ப்பதும் அசட்டுத்தனமாகும், ஏமாளித்தனமாகும்.

இது மட்டுமல்ல, தத்துவஞானத்தின் வரலாறும் சரி, சமுதாய விஞ்ஞானத்தின் வரலாறும் சரி, மார்க்சியத்தில் "குறுங்குழுவாதம்" போன்றெததுவும் கிடையாது என்பதைத் தெள்ளத் தெளிவாகக் காட்டுகின்றன. அதாவது, அது ஒரு இறுகிப்போன வறட்டுப் போதனையல்ல, உலக நாகரிக வளர்ச்கியின் ராஜபாட்டையின் வழியே வராமல் அதனின்று விலகி வேறொரு வழியே முளைத்த போதனை அல்ல. மாறாக, மனித குலத்தின் முன்னணிச் சிந்தைனயாளர்கள் ஏற்கெனவே எழுப்பியிருந்த கேள்விகளுக்கு மார்க்ஸ் விடைகள் தந்தார் என் பதில் தான் குறிப்பாக அவருடைய மேதாவிலாசம் அடங்கியுள்ளது. தத்துவஞானம், அரசியல் பொருளாதாரம், சோஷலிசம் ஆகியவற்றின் தலைசிறந்த பிரதிநிதிகளுடைய போதனைகளின் நேரடியான, உடனடியான தொடர்ச்சியாகத் தான் மார்க்சின் போதனை எழுந்தது.

மார்க்சின் போதைன மெய்யானது, அதனால்தான் அது எல்லாம் வல்ல தன்மை பெற்றிருக்கிறது. அது முழுமையான, உள்ளிணக்கம் கொண்ட போதனை. ஓர் ஒன்றிணைந்த உலகப் பார்வையை அது மக்களுக்கு அளிக்கிறது. எந்த வடிவத்திலும் அமைந்த மூடநம்பிக்கைகளோ, பிற்போக்கோ, முதலாளித்துவ ஒடுக்குமுறைக்கு ஆதரவோ இந்த உலகப் பார்வையுடன் ஒத்துவர முடியாது. ஜெர்மானியத் தத்துவஞானம், ஆங்கிலேய அரசியல் பொருளாதாரம், பிரெஞ்சு சோஷலிசம் என்ற வடிவத்தில் 19ம் நூற்றாண்டில் மனித குலம் உருவாக்கித் தந்த தலைசிறந்த படைப்புகளின் உரிமை பெற்ற வாரிசுதான் மார்க்சியம்.

இவை மார்க்சியத்தின் மூன்று தோற்றுவாய்களாகும், மூனறு உள்ளடக்கக் கூறுகளாகும். இவற்றைச் சுருக்கமாகக் கவனிப்போம்.

Six degrees of separation is the theory that every person on this planet can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of people, places, events that has no more than five layers or intermediaries. Mathematicians and MIT professors have researched this theory and see some validity.

Premawathie Manamperi was a beautiful 22 year old Sinhala woman from Kataragama. If you don’t believe me about her beauty, let me tell you, she was crowned Avurudhu Kumari in April 1970. She was a pleasant happy girl coming from a modest home living with her parents and ten siblings. If you search the archives, you may come across pictures of her in black and white. Even the grey scale cannot hide her beauty. She was living at the time where there were no cell phones or the internet.

Shobana Dharmarajah, popularly known as Isaipriya was a beautiful 27 year old Tamil girl from Jaffna. Just search for her name and you will see why I call her a beauty. Unlike Premawathie, Isaipriya was fully immersed and grew up in the cell phone/internet era. Isaipriya was a media personality, a journalist and a broadcaster. The LTTE hired her to broadcast news from their network.

I feel connected to Premawathie – because I walked the same streets she walked on. I have been to Katharagama first as a child with my parents and have walked from Tissamaharama to Katharagama on many occasions. I ate bunnis and drank tea at the same tea boutiques where Premawathie ate bunnis and drank tea. Premawathie and I worshipped at the same Katharagama Devaley, the jungle shrine, with mystique rituals and practices. [proof of six degrees of separation]

I feel connected to Isaipriya – because she walked the same streets I walked on when she lived in Jaffna. She enjoyed ice cream at Subhas Café at the Jaffna main bus station where I would swing by for my fix of ice cream made with full cream milk, loaded with calories when I was a student in Jaffna. And to round off my connection to Isaipriya, she attended Vembadi Girls High School in Jaffna, a school my mother and my sister attended. [proof of six degrees of separation]

Now here comes the bombshell – a further proof of six degrees of separation.

I feel Premawathie and Isaipriya were connected. They both met their death in the hands of The Sri Lankan Army! Sri Lankan Army is the common link that connected Premawathie from the South and Isaipriya from the North.

They were both alive when they were picked up by the army, but soon thereafter they were both dead. Though their time line was thirty eight years apart, there is an eerie unity in their death! Unbeknownst to each other, they became sisters in their death and their sisterhood was facilitated by the Sri Lankan Army.

On April 5, 1971 Jathika Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) launched a surprise attack on several police stations and government installations in the South with a view to overthrowing democratically elected government of Sirimavo Bandaranaike. Around mid April 1971 the army was deployed in the south of Sri Lanka to bring the JVP insurgency under control. There is no evidence that Premawathie was linked to the insurgency forged by the JVP. After several hours of interrogation by the army personnel Premawathie was stripped naked and was made to walk the streets of Katharagama and two army officers, Liutinent Wijesuriya of Gemunu Watch and private Ratnayake sprayed bullets into her with a sterling sub-machine gun. As she was crawling on the ground, still alive, she was picked up and buried alive in a pit in a vacant lot. Minutes later, another soldier from Wijesuriya’s unit came and put a bullet through her head and finished the job. [this gruesome narrative is straight from the court proceedings and evidence presented in court – by witnesses including civilians and soldiers]

There is no doubt that Isaipriya was a LTTE sympathizer and was doing broadcasts for the LTTE. During the final stages of the war still and video images show the soldiers took Isaipriya into custody in the Nandi Kadal area. Subsequent forensic examination showed that Isaipriya was shot in the head execution style and her body desecrated.
