An authentic literary study or studies on Writing in Thamil, especially on Sri Lankan Contemporary Thamil Literature remains to be written. Even for that matter,  an unbiased History of Thamil Literature in Sri Lanka is yet to be chronicled. This is my sincere view. Whatever that had been written so far from time to time, in various forms, are intrinsically biased. In such a context, I strongly feel that the contributions K.S.Sivakumaran, a bilingual (Thamil / English)  writer, poet  and critic/columnist has made continuously for the past half a century or so deserves to be assessed in the right dimensions. 

More than his creative writing and translations, he is widely known as a literary critic ( although, he calls himself a mere literary columnist). As far as I know his articles, reviews, criticism and other pieces of writing, especially on Sri Lankan Thamil Literature  and also on the Film as an Art Form and the Theatre, and the Media are, in fact, records of the growth of Lankan Thamil Literature seen from an impartial and balanced view.. 

His books alone ( more than 12 ) are a testimony to this important fact. He is an indefatigable and untiring literary personality we have in our midst. He is 67 years old. 

Readers in both Thamil and English will remember him as an unbiased and balanced literary critic His Tamil Writing in Sri Lanka ( 1974) and Aspects of Culture in Sri Lanka - Le Roy Robinson in Conversation with K.S.Sivakumaran (1989) remain the only  two books in English on Lankan Thamil Literature to this date. .History, I am certain, will  record his indispensability  and usefulness in the field of contemporary Thamil literature.

Like other Sri Lankans in the calibre of Es Po,  and Agasthiyar, K. S. Sivakumaran also engages in writing actively on foreign soils. Even his broadcasts in Englsh and Thamil on the arts and literature were applauded by many listeners. For his impartiality, he was invited to compile and present a weekly programme on the arts - English, Sinhala and Thamil - over the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation

We have pleasure and privilege in adorning  K.S. Sivakumaran's contributions in English on  Thamil Literature, in our editions.
